1) How many years have you worked in the metrology industry?
RH: 35 Years

2) What industries do you have the most experience in? What specific equipment have you worked with the most in those industries
RH: Shipbuilding (Digital theodolites, photogrammetry, total stations, laser trackers), Aerospace (Laser trackers), and Energy

Most of my time has been in management and been focused on the technical application of the equipment in existing processes.

3) What was your favorite project and why?
RH: My favorite project was the application of photogrammetry and laser trackers to align catapults on aircraft carriers. The next favorite was the integration of measurement systems and milling machines to automate the shielding installation around nuclear power plants on aircraft carriers and submarines.

4) What training certificates do you have?
RH: It seems my personnel always ended up with the training certifications.  However, I feel more than qualified with many systems and procedures as I designed many applications of the equipment and analysis.

5) Tell us a sentence or two about you personally.
RH: I’m happily married with three children and two grandkids.  I’m extremely fortunate to be around on the ground floor of our industry.  It’s been a great career.

John Gross - Calibration Supervisor at API Services

John Gross – Calibration Supervisor at API Services

John Gross – Calibration Supervisor

What is your educational background?
JG: I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University.

What training certificates do you have?
JG: SpatialAnalyzer Advanced, 10-Hour OSHA Outreach Training Course for General Industry, and Laser Tracker Calibration.

What equipment do you calibrate in house?
JG: We perform calibrations on the following API products: T2+, T3, T3+, OmniTrac and Radian. We have future plan to integrate the OmniTrac 2 into our calibration system. We also certify a wide range of laser tracker systems, scale bars, and SMR’s from many different equipment manufacturers.

What are the benefits of calibrating your tracker?
JG: Regular calibrations on your laser tracker system help ensure that your unit is running within its published specifications. Some of the pre-calibration testing we perform here can catch problems that may not be easily identified by the end user. Often times we can catch a problem before it develops into an issue that may have a negative impact on system’s accuracy or repeatability.

How often should you calibrate your tracker? Why?
JG: At API we recommend that you send your unit in for calibration annually. This helps ensure that you are running with the latest and greatest firmware and software upgrades (we provide firmware uploads on the systems themselves and the most up-to-date compensation software on the flash drive that accompanies the tracker after calibration). We further recommend that you keep abreast of the latest measurement software and compensation software updates. In this way you can be secure in the fact that you are making use of the most recent updates API has to offer.
